Danced Action Painting

Performance: Britta Lieberknecht
Paper – mounted to the wall
Markers, Oil Pastels, Wax Crayons

Britta Lieberknecht transforms movement energy into drawing.
The exciting aspect of this performance, which combines dance improvisation and drawing, is that its unity contains divergence. While the movements dissipate in the moment, a drawing emerges from the same moment that remains. Although it bears witness to the movement and carries its energy within, it is independent and has its own unique expression. The pencils act as seismographs of the movement process that arises in silence. From gliding, shaking, trembling, bouncing, sinking, and rising movements of the whole body, the pencils meet the paper – dabbing, piercing, gliding. An expressive musicality characterizes this process, giving voice to the inner movement. The artist’s breath, the presence of the audience, and the sounds of the pencils on the paper are sources of energy that flow in as the drawing crystallizes. For Britta Lieberknecht, dance action painting is an enlargement of her small-format drawing. She perceives the latter as a dance of the pencils on the paper. While seated, the movement of drawing flows from a centered core into both arms. In her dance action painting, her entire body becomes the drawing tool.
