John Edwards

John Edwards (double bass, London) is an internationally acclaimed improviser.
Since the mid-80s, his trio The Pointy Birds performed with Lea Anderson’s dance groups The Cholmodeleys and The Featherstonehaughs. Edwards became a member of groups such as the band God, B Shops for the Poor, and The Honkies and played in London’s improvised‑music scene, giving solo performances and working with everyone possible. Since the mid-90s, Edwards has been one of the most active musicians on the international scene, playing up to 200 gigs per year. Collaborators include Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Joe McPhee, Peter Broetzmann, Gerd Dudek, Louis Moholo, John Tchicai, Sunny Murray, John Butcher, to name a few.
In 2001 with Paul Lovens and trombonist Paul Hubweber, he formed the trio PaPaJo, which now performs as a duo with Hubweber.
In 2008 he released his first solo bass album.
He has toured Africa, South and North America, throughout Western and Eastern Europe, New Zealand and Asia.
In 2020 he was awarded the Instant Award in Improvised Music.
Other projects see him working with Mulatu Astatke, Jonny Greenwood and dance companies of Mal Pelo and Virgilio Siena.
He features on well over 250 recordings.
